LEVIN-MARTON RAILWAY.
Mr Newman, M.P., does not intend to allow the grass to grow under his feet in reference to the connecting railway route between Levin and Martou, via Fox ton. We realise that this route will be adopted by the Governmeht for the direct run between Wellington and Auckland. It’s final adoption is now only a question of time—and agitation. The member for the district wrote to the Minister for Public Works on January 14th, asking when a trial survey between Levin and Marton would be started. He has received a reply to the effect that no special vote having been taken for this survey, the work has not been put in hand, but the question of making the necessary provision will receive consideration ' when the whole matter of a survey ot the proposed
lines is being dealt with. This reply does not square with a sum which already appears in the appropriations chargeable on the Public Works Fund, page 7 viz., “surveys newlines of railway, We were given to understand some time since that provision had been made on the Estimates for the survey of the proposed route. Perhaps Ministerial changes is responsible for the oversight.
