FIGHT FOR LIFE IN AN OFFICE.
A limiting: lipjit for life was witnessed in l.lie* Wall Street district of New York, on the morning of Sunday, December 20111, when Harry B. Suydarn, an outside broker, was shot twice by a disappointed inventor, named L,umsden.
The struggle between the men which preceded the shooting, took place in an office on the street level, and several hundred outside brokers, who were at work near by, witnessed it through the window.
Lumsdeii had invented an electric vibratory message machine, which Suydarn financed. Dumsden claimed that his share of the profits was withheld, and the shooting took place in consequence of his calling at Snydam's office in Broad Street and demanding his money. Suydarn was sitting at his desk, the window, when lyUiusden entered the room. Apparently the broker refused to comply with Lumsden's demand; for it was appaient to the men in the street that a serious quarrel was in progress.
Suddenly L,mnsden pulled a revolver "from his overcoat pocket, but before he could shoot, Suydam’s secretary, George Downs, seized him, and shouted for help. Suydarn and Downs endeavc u a d to get the revolver away from the inlnriated inventor, who fought like a madman. Dmnsden managed to break away from them, and then, just as Downs seized him again, he fired twice under Downs’ arms at Suydarn. The first bullet struck the broker in the chest, while the second inflicted a trifling flesh wound.
At this moment a number of other men rushed into the room and over-powered Luniadcn. who was still struggling desperately with the plucky secretary, and endeavouring to use his revolver again. Downs had pinned him down by the throat in one corner, while Suydarn lay prostrate behind the door.
Suydarn was hurriedly removed to the Hudson Hospital, where hopes were entertained of saving his life.
Lumsdeii claimed that he fired in self-defence, but the crowd ol outside brokers who witnessed the battle, declared that this was unt ru e.
