LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS.

We beard a good deal during election time about the vast district between Otaki and Waitara not being represented in the Legislative Council. There are, we understand, several vacancies to be filled in the Upper Chamber, and thus the Ministry is provided with an opportunity to do justice to the West Coast. Some of the appointments to the Lords have brought that Chamber into ridicule, and the claims of men of intelligence have been subservient to elevating wind-bags and political derelects and time servers. There is one gentleman in this electorate, who, if selected, would do honour to the position and whose services should not be lost to the country. We refer to our estimable townsman, Mr F- W. Franklaud, whose appointment would meet with almost universal satisfaction on this coast. True, Mr Franklaud was defeated at the late election, but when all the circumstances are taken into account, this should in no way be a barrier to his priority. He has been a student of politics from youth up; one of the world’s foremost actuaries * a democrat to the core and last, but not least, he is one of nature’s gentlemen. We are led to believe that Mr Frankland would be prepared to favourably consider such appointment if offered. His ability as a statistician and actuary, apart from other considerations, should merit his inclusion when the vacancies are under consideration.
