STATE SCHOOL GROUNDS.
A correspondent in this issue complains of the unlovely appearance of the local State school grounds. We agree that the school surroundings are very primitive. The school committee are the caretakers of the buildings and grounds, and much as they would like to see an improvement, they have not the money to carry it out. As a matter of fact the quarterly grant from the Board, viz,, odd per quarter, is bajeiy
sufficient to meet school cleaning expenses and other incidentals and the funds are now overdrawn. The Board has treated the school fairly in respect to grants for certain purposes, and it is questionable whether they would “shell out” for further improvements. Before anything can be done towards beautifying the grounds the fences must be erected. The front fence requires to be high - boarded or picketed, a close-boarded boundary fence dividing the old cemetery would have to be erected; and the ground immediately in front of school divided off from the other portion of the play ground. Some very pretty plots could be laid off at this spot. Further, the girls playground should be shut off from the boys. All this means an expenditure of at least ,£IOO. Are the townspeople prepared to supplement a grant from the Board for this purpose ? We hope something will be done to improve the appearance of the school in the near future.
