CARDINAL AND LORD MAYOR.
Sydney, February 1
The Lord Mayor invited Cardinal Moran to send the sums collected in the Catholic Church to the Lord Mayor’s Italian relief fund. This course, he mentioned, had been followed by the other denominations, but the Cardinal wrote to the Lord Mayor declining the request, pointing out that charitable aid from private enabled the Church to alleviate distress in cases otherwise overlooked by the public officials. In public charities a good deal of the funds was spent in salaries of secretaries and agents, while not infrequently it also happened that some individuals insinuated themselves into the administration of these funds who did not enjoy the confidence of the Catholic body. Such cases were not unknown in Australia.
The Lord Mayor stated he was pained to receive such a letter from thp Cardinal. He had only one object in view. It was not a question of nationality or creed, but one of humanity and sympathy. The response to his appeal had been magnificent, and there was every reason to believe the citizens were proud of the noble services the committee had rendered in gathering the fund. He declined a suggestion to send a further letter to the Cardinal on the subject, preferring to leaye the public to form their own conclusions in respect to the matter.
