MATCH-THROWING.
A Lady Ablaze in the
Street.
A serious accident occurred opposite Mr Perrott’s pharmacy in Manners Street, at about 3 p.m. on Thursday, says the Dominion, through the carelessness of a smoker in throwing away a blazing match. It alighted on the light summer dress of a young lady who was waiting for a tramcar. As soon as she found her dress to be alight, the young lady screamed, but for a moment or two the bystanders seemed dumbfounded by the occurrence. Then Mr D- A. Morton, of Kilbirnie, and a motorman named Herlihy, seeing the lady’s perilous plight, threw their coats round the blazing frock, and not without some little difficulty smothered the flames. The young lady, who was treated by Mr Perrott, was found to be rather badly burnt about the arms. Her hair was slightly burnt, and her eyebrows singed, and had there been any further hesitancy on the part of those present, the lady might easily have been disfigured lor life. As it was, she sustained rather a shock, and Mr Morton, who acted with great promptitude, was badly burnt about the arms. An unpleasant feature of the accident was the action of a person who refused to lend a topcoat lie was carrying over his arm to smother the flames. Smokers should be careful after using a match to see that it reaches the road or side-channel, apd so avoid such painful occurrences as that of yesterday afternoon.
