LEVIN SHOPKEEPERS AND SUGAR.

Who is responsible for Delay ? Says Thursday’s Levin paper• “There are 300 bags of sugar lying at Foxton, and we are told by a Levin storekeeper this morning that efforts to get delivery have been fruitless. Why, no one can as yet understand. Consequently there is a partial sugar famine in Levin. The storekeepers are getting goods by way ot Foxton because of the saving in freight charges. Sugar by rail costs £1 xßs per ton, and then it has to be carted from the station. Getting it by way of steamers to Wirokino and then by waggon from thence, costs £1 3s landed at the shop door. This is a big saving, and the hitch at Foxton over the 300 bags of sugar leads to the impression among some that there is a desire to burke traffic by steamer.”
