THE OPPOSITION.
Had the Opposition been stronger during the life of the late Parliament, they would have been enabled to render more effective service in saving the Government from the consequences of their own folly, remarks Christchurch Truth. To some extent the past may be retrieved during the coming three years, but not unless the Opposition succeed in forcing their opponents to confess the error of their ways and to consent to facing the position with an honest determination to do what is right in the interests of all classes. The immediate future may have all sorts of changes instore, and seeing that the public memory for the efforts of its benefactors is so short, it is necessary to press home with emphasis the outstanding truth that the best services rendered to the country by the Government have been those which filtered through the closest scrutiny of a strong Opposition.
