POLITICAL.

The Thames Vacancy.

Auckland, January 7.

The reconstruction of the Cabinet has created anything but a good impression in Auckland. On all hands the greatest dissatisfaction is expressed, and the surprising retirement of Mr M’Gowan and the consequent loss of a Minister to Auckland has created the greatest consternation. At the Thames disappointment is mixed with indignation. It is freely surmised that Mr M’Gowau has been “squeezed out,” and there is a very little doubt but that if an Oppositionist stands he will be elected to the Thames seat in the present temper of the constituency. Visitors from Thames to Auckland today are very bitter, and indicate that Mr M’Gowan will be looked to for an explanation of his resignation. The mining community is by no means satisfied with the appointment of Mr R. M’Kenzie to the Mines portfolio, and generally speaking the feeling is that Sir Joseph Ward has, by his unsatisfactory selection, driven another nail into his own political coffin. The only name mentioned so far in connection with the Thames vacancy is that of Mr Alec. Burns, Mayor, who is a Government supporter, but an Oppositionist is certain to come out.

Messrs A. Burns (Maj r or of Thames) and E. Deeble (who stood at last general elections) are said to be already in the field for the Thames seat. Other names mentioned as probable candidates are Messrs R. T. Douglas (a former Mayor of Thames), H. H. Adams (a wellknown mining man), F. H. Haselden (one of the Ohinemuri candidates at last election), and Wm. M’Cullough (of the Thames Star). The suggestion that Mr M’Nab may contest the Thames seat is discredited in certain usually well* informed circles in Wellington.
