Mr Angus McPherson, an Australian prospector, has just completed an expedition up the Grey valley undertaken by him to locate a tin lode. The Grey Diver Argus publishes an account of the result of the search. He has not exactly round what he is after, but he has discovered quite enough to satisfy anyone that a lode exists. He brought back with him a saucer full of nearly jet black stream tin and a lump of slannile broken off a hundred weight boulder he came across in the creek, besides a I’ltle bag full of ore specimens of the country rock. The slannile, he reckons, at the lowest estimate, contains six per cent ol tin, which ia much more than the ore stuff worked so successfully at Mount liischoff, Tasmania, where Mr McPherson was stationed for years, and gained a great deal of experience regarding tin mining. On the stroke of 8 o’clock one night recently, twelve white-clad cooks set to work peeling potatoes at the Cookery Exhibition, Horticultural Hall, Westminister (says the Daily Express). There was a large audience to watch this “ Murphy Marathon,” and sternfaced judges of both sexes watched the peelers’ every movement from a raised jury box. A great tin pail containing 281 b of potatoes was in front of each competitor, who was armed with a patent Lancashire peeler resembling a •‘J” nib. At the word “Go” the twelve began work, and the silence was only broken by the clattering of the potatoes in the tin pails and the heavy breathing of the competitors. Ihe winner’s time was gmin iSsoc, and the slowest israin.
