The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, December 31, 1908. “THE MANLY ART.”

Over twenty - thousand people paid ,£26,000 at Sydney on Boxing Day to witness two men, a negro aud a white man, punch each other until one should fall lifeless or insensible in the ring. The police stopped the brutal exhibition after fourteen rounds bad been fought and one of the combatants had been severely punished. The details of the blood - letting contest were published in our last issue. Those who witnessed the fight, could they have gratified their wish, would have kept the punchers at it until one had been stretched out, almost lifeless. This kind of thing is called sport! Surely the time has arrived for restrictive legislation. We hold that every lad should be taught the “manly art” for defensive purposes, but there is a wide breach between a friendly bout and the blackguardly, demoralising and vicious set-to recently witnessed in Sydney. Such exhibitions are a blot on our modern civilisation.
