THE LATEST CONSUMPTION CURE.
Marvellous Results Alleged.
To have a couple of men waiting on you in defiance of the Quackery Prevention Act and telling you that they have a remedy for consumption that is simply infallible and they are prepared to prove its efficacy to the hilt, is rather a singular experience, says a contributor to the Mastertou Times. Yet this is what happened to a well known resident a few days ago. “What is the remedy?' he naturally asked.
“ It is a discovery made in Australia, in New South Wales, aud we have purchased all rights connected with it in New Zealand,” “ Have you tried it.”
“ Tried it ? Yes ! We have treated bad cases and the results are wonderful.” “ You believe it to be an absolute cure ?”
“No! We don’t merely believe it, we are certain about it.” “Do you mean to say it can cure advanced cases ?” “It will cure cases no matter how bad they are, aud prolong life, provided there is enough sound lung left to live upon. It will remove the disease.” “If it can do that its value caiuiot be estimated. Have you treated auy cases here—people that I know.”
“ Yes ! Here is a letter from a young man we think you know. You can read it.”
In the letter produced the writer said that although he had not added much to his weight, his lung power had improved wonderfully aud his breathing was free and easy. He was beginning to feel quite restored in health.”
Another letter was from a person who reckoned he was cured and related how he had given it to an emaciated friend. This friend added iGlbs to bis weight in a month or at the rate of half a pound a day. Several similar letters were produced, one document being the copy of a declaration made by a patient who was restored to health after going through the bauds of a number of medical men whose names were given.
“ How is the medicine used ?”
“ The apparatus needed is a spirit lamp and a kettle fitted with a tube. You mix the stuff in some water, boil it in the kettle and inhale the steam.”
“ Is it disagreeable.” “Oh, no. It requires patience. The inhalations must be maintained for a considerable time, and the patient has to persevere. A disease that often takes years to develop cannot be cured in a day or a week. Months may be required.” “ Are the luugs healed ?”
“ They arc cleansed aud healed. Time is required to remove the tuberculous deposits with which the lungs are charged, but under this medicine they have to travel.” “ Is the process painful ?” “ Oh, no. Rather the contrary. A crust forms over the inflamed and diseased parts, and after a time this bursts. This is followed by a discharge of pus (matter) that perplexes and often scares the patient. Eventually this disappears, aud, the luugs becoming healthy, good vigorous breathing aud returning strength make the patient feel like a new being. Throughout this stage perseverauce is, of course, indispensable.” “ The cure is then complete?” “ Well, the appetite improves, aud the weight increases. But the treatmeut, which is not so very troublesome, should be continued as long as there is the suspicion of a vestige of the disease remaining.”
“ Who is the discoverer ?”
“ Until some years ago he was a policeman iu a bush township iu New South Wales. He was an experimentalist. Colds aud influenza were prevalent, aud he found a herb that seemed to control these complaints. Its fame got abroad, and finally it was found to be singularly successful iu chronic ailments. Applied to a wound or sore, its effects were marvellous. The healing process started immediately. Here is some of it.”
The stuff, filling a round tin, was dark aud thick, not unlike tar or molasses, and had a strong smell of turpentime or other essential oil. It has an astringent taste, but is said to be nou-poisouous. It is a pure vegetable product, and prepared only by the discoverer, who preserves his own secret.
Mr Hogg, M.P,, has received from Hon. G. Fovvlds, Minister of Public Health, the following communication :—“ I have to thank you for your letter in reference to “Cox’s Kureka Cure for Consumption.” I sincerely trust that the remedy may be all that Mr Harris states. Mr Harris has seen the Chief Health Officer, and arrangements have been made to give the preparation a trial as soon as Mr Harris is able to supply certain information.”
