USE OF THE LETTERS “ DR.”
A Christchurch Case.
Christchurch, December 22
Win. H. D. Newth, described as a herbalist, appeared before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., at the Police, Court this morning to answer a charge under Section 20 of the Police Offences Act, of having used the letters “ Dr.,” an abbreviation of doctor, the use of which was likely to lead people to believe that the defendant held a medical degree, diploma, or certificate. His Worship, in convicting, said if a man deliberately laid himself out to mislead the public with full knowledge (as was evidenced in the present case by the production of the notice shown in defendant’s window) he (Magistrate) could take no grounds whatever in consideration. The law Was for the protection of the public, and was very drastic. The individual was amply protected because no steps could be taken without the previous consent of the. AttorneyGeneral. In this case he hadjjjeIpre him Dr Pindlay’s sign manual authorising the prosecution. Personally he felt very strongly about the quacks. He did not usejjhe Sive way, hA| use it
