THE REMINGTON LETTER.
The following is the letter upon which Mr Geo. Hutchison based his challenge to Mr A. E. Remington, M.P., for Rangitikei, to resign bis seat:—
(Seal of House of Representatives) Wellington, Sept., 21st, 1906.
Dear Mr ,
Yours of the 19th to hand. I quite realise that you are having to pay more than you originally anticipated, but, under the present circumstances, belter that than lose it altogether. One important reason that I have pushed on so incessantly to get the restrictions removed right away was that I know it is the intention of a number of members to interview the Government and ask for an assurance that they will not allow any more Native land to be sold ; and you will see at once that if they get this promise, and your application had not been dealt with, it would have been hopeless to expect to get it through. I think you will appreciate the attention and watchfulness I have shown ; to me the result is a remuneration of a few pounds, to you it means the securing of what might otherwise have been a total loss. Had it drifted along as so many recommendations do, as you I dare say know, it might have been completely lost. If I name ,£2O fur my work, 1 hope you will not think it out of place. —Yours faithfully. A. E. REMINGTON.
Subsequently Mr Remington acknowledged the receipt of Mr ’s “cheque for £20 —with thanks.”
