Thu preparation and checking of the rolls and the appointment of returning officers and scrutineers at present leave much to be desired (says the Auckland Star), and if more care were taken in these particulars we. would hear less of the perennial demand for recounts or fresh polls. But when a “ prima facie ’’ case is made out for investigation in any given district it seems to us altogether inequitable that the parties concerned in the issue should be called upon to pay the expenses of the enquiry. The polls are controlled by the Government, and irregularities, when they take place, must be due almost always to the neglect or the connivance of the officials.
