A WIFE DESERTER.
“ A Heartless Offence.” Claud Eric Bryant, a well-dressed and prosperous-looking young man, appeared' before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., at Palmerston North yesterday morning to answer to a charge of deserting his wife. The facts of the case were that Bryant' deserted his wife a few mouths after he had uTarried her, and for the past six moths he had only contributed 10s altogether towards her support. He was arrested in Levin, and brought before the Court on Tuesday last, when the Magistrate remanded him till to-day in order that the police might make inquiries concerning him. His Worship said he had gone into the case and had found some difficulty in knowing what to do. Addressing the accused the Magistrate said:—“There is no doubt you have been guilty of a heartless offence against your wife, and that at a time wheu she most needed your aid. She is however very anxious that you should not be sent to prison, and I will therefore convict you and and order you to come up for sentence when called upon. If in future you dp your duty by your wife nothing more will be heard of your case. If you don’t do your duty you will be called up and severely punished.’’
