Information has been received by the police that a man named Scott fell from a kauri tree at Parakao while gathering gum, and dislocated his neck.
Hamilton, Dec. 4.
Details of the drowning fatality in the Waipa river show that a Maori woman named Raiha Hairaona and her child were crossing the river in a canoe. The latter fell out, and the mother heroically jumped in to save it. Both were drowned.
Wellington, Dec. 4.
The largest shipment of dairy produce to London this season was made by the Corinthic, which left Wellington yesterday. It consisted of 45,072 boxes of butter, valued at ,£119,440, and 18,156 crates of cheese valued at .£68,085. The total value of the shipment was ,£187,525. Masterton, Dec. 4.
Owing to the reduced demand for timber at prevailing prices, the timber companies have decided to close their sawmills for the time being. The mills in this district belonging to the Wairarapa Sawmillers’ Association have notified their employees that work will be stopped in a few days. A considerable number of joiners and carpenters are just now out of employment, and the depression in the building trade is - being felt by the tradesmen acutely.
