THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
The fine weather during last month and a better market (telegraphs an Auckland correspondent of the Dominion), were responsible for an improved condition in the hemp industry during November, and there are indications that the present month will show a still further improvement. During November, 1073 bales were handled by the Government grader at Auckland (Mr W. H. O. Johnston), an amount equal to 245 tons. This quantity, while it is an increase of about 25 per cent., on the quantity of the previous month, is not a third of what was put through during November of last year, when Mr Johnston graded 3851 bales. The quality of the hemp also shows an improvement, but in the opinion of the grader it is not all that it might be. A large proportion of the consignments, he says, was spoilt by being too soft, and was, in addition, bruised in the stripping, and had been poorly scutched.
