RESULT OF SECOND BALLOT.

A Win for the Opposition Candidate. Mr Newman, the Opposition candidate for the Manawatu seat, has managed to confirm his previous victory at the first poll by securing an absolute majority over the Government candidate in the Second Ballot of nearly six hundred. At the opening of the campaign four candidates were in the field, namely : Messrs John Stevens (Government), F. W. Frankland (Government), Edward Newman (Opposition), and 0. Gardner (Independent). It was feared that Messrs Frankland and Gardner would split the Government vote and allow the Opposition candidate to slip in, but, the result of the first ballot proved that the Opposition candidate secured within 130 votes of an absolute majority. Messrs Gardner and Frankland cut out 604 votes from the totals of . the two leading party candidates at the first ballot, but the Opposition candidate showed a lead over the Government candidate of 346 in the first ballot. Except at Marton the Opposition candidate’s supporters lacked organisation, while the old veteran’s followers were well organised throughout the electorate. With Messrs Frankland and Gardner out of the way, both the Government and Opposition candidate’s supporters put forfh renewed efforts to pull off the victory. Mr Stevens’ supporters could, not improve on their wellorganised committees, but the Opposition’s turn had come to work ■ and they lost no time in bending to the task. Their efforts were particularly evidenced in Foxton, where at the first ballot, Mr Newman had no organisation and not a vehicle plied for voters on his behalf, while Mr Stevens’ committee and the “ trade ” appeared to be working unitedly for a win. The result was Stevens 372, Newman 162. As a result of organisation on the part of Mr Newman’s supporters the second Foxton ballot resulted: Stevens 424, an increase over his first polling of 52, Newman 316, an increase of 154. We may state in passing that Mr Stevens polled at Foxton exactly the same number of votes at the Second Ballot as he did in the election of 1905. Mr Stevens secured majorities at six booths, namely Foxton, Bulls, Sanson, Wangaehu, Taonui and Greatford, his highest majorities being at Foxton and Bulls, honours were even at Parewanui. Mr Newman led at 18 booths, namely Marton, Awahuri, Awahuri Road, Carnarvon, Clydesdale, Glen Oroua, Himatangi, Kairanga, Arawhata, Lower Aorangi, Mount View, Mokohau, Newbury, Oroua Bridge, Rongotea, Taikorea, Turakina and' Upper Tutaenui.
