TOWARDS THE POLE.
The Nimrod’s Return.
Christchurch, November 19. The work of getting the British Antarctic exploration ship Nimrod ready for sea is proceeding apace, and the crew have been engaged during the past two days in bending the vessel’s sails and putting the finishing touches to the rigging. Yesterday the vessel was engaged in taking in 210 tons of Westport coal from the hulk Darra. The Nimrod’s bunker’s were filled, and the balance of the coal is being put into the holds. The vessel will also take on board 50 tons of Blackball coal, thus making a total of 260 tons.
Practically the whole of the stores and foodstuffs are now stored in the shed on the wharf, but a few small packages containing gifts from the friends of members of the expedition have still to arrive. The stores will be loaded into the holds and, once they are on board, there will be little left to do before the Nimrod sets out on December 1 from Lyttelton on liic second of her long an 1 lonely missions to the Antarctic.
