London Wool Sales
Dalgety and Company, Limited, Wellington, have received the following cable message from their London House under date of the 16th instant: —: “ The new arrivals amounted to 182,000 bales, and adding stocks carried forward from the September series, 38,000 bales, make a total of 220,000 bales available for sale. Out of this quantity 41,500 bales have been forwarded direct to manufacturers at Home and abroad and 1000 bales have been sold privately since the close of last series, leaving 177,500 bales available for sale. Christchurch, Friday 17. The first wool sale of the season was held on Friday before a large attendance, including representatives of the local woollen mills and Home, Continental and American firms. The wool forward was entirely from farmers on the Plains and the Peninsula, while the large stations were unrepresented. The wool was not in such good condition as at the first sale last year, and though well grown was somewhat dirty, on account of the strong winds early in spring. Competition was very brisk, buyers evidently holding large orders, Compared with the Wellington sales, prices were about }4d per lb better. Very few lots were passed at the sale, which, considering the condition of the wool, is a satisfactory one. 4931 bales were offered.
