GENERAL ELECTION.
Touching the Manawatu, as we predicted at the opening of the campaign, the battle raged between Mr John Stevens, Liberal and Government, and Mr Edward Newman, Opposition, Mr Stevens’ supporters were well organised throughout the electorate and every voter’s name on the roll scrutinised, and no stone was left unturned to see that supporters reached the poll. Mr Newman had practically no organisation at Foxton and played off his own bat. Speaking locally not one vehicle plied for him neither had he a tout, yet he managed to score 162 against Mr Stevens 372, and Messrs Frankland and Gardner shared 115 each. At Marton, however, Mr Newman defeated Mr Stevens by a majority of 167. The numbers were Newman 643, Stevens 476. Mr Newman obtained majorities over the Government candidate in Awahuri, Carnarvon, Clydesdale, Glen Oroua,. Kairanga, Arawhata, Lower Aorangi, Mount View, Makohau, Newbury, Oroua
The general election of 1908 created great interest throughout the Dominion, and although the Government will go back with a substantial majority, yet there was not the sweeping of the polls as in 1905. The principal surprise packet was the deteat of the Hon. Mr McNab, Minister tor Lauds, Mr A. Kidd for Auckland Central, and Mr W. W. Tanner for Avon. The last named has a chance in the second ballot. Other Government sitting members who went to the polls and were defeated, either by Opposition candidates or Ministerial opponents were :—Messrs Dillon, A. L. D. Fraser, Hornsby, Major, Symes, Wood, Stevens, Izard. The Opposition take Hawke’s Bay, Waiiarapa, Patea, Palmerston North, Manawatu, Wellington North, Geraldine, and Malaura, all straight-out appropriations Irom the Government, and Egmont, Stratford and Waitemata —seats more or less affected by the creation of new elect< rrtes. The total number of new Opposition seats is eleven. The Government lose to Independent candidates Wairau (from which the Hon. C. H. Mills retired) and Christchurch North, won by Mr T. E. Taylor, from Mr C. M. Gray. New Opposition members elected are: —Sir William Russell, Messrs W. C. Buchanan, Dive, Pearce, Hine, Guthrie, Buick, Newman, Herdman, Atkinson, Jeffries and Phillips. New Government members elected are : —Messrs Reed, Glover, Macdonald, Vigor Brown, J. P. Duke, Forbes, G. W. Russell and Craigie. The chief electoral officer states that on present appearances twentytwo second ballots will be required. The following are the electorates. —Wellington South, East, North and Suburbs, Dunedin North, Ashburton, Palmerston, Wanganui, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, Geraldine, Ohinemuri, Timaru, Egmont, Tuapeka, Pahiatua, Gisborne, Hurunut, Bay of Plenty, Avon, Waitemata, Nelson. All these will take place on Tuesday except in the Bay of Plenty, but in one or two cases, such as Nelson and Gisborne, the necessity for another ballot may disappear when the absent votes are all received. Sir Joseph Ward said the results gave the Government a substantial majority. Mr Massey, interviewed, said the Opposition, on the returns to hand had not lost a man. There were five new Opposition members at least with quite a number of possibilities on the second ballot. The country had pronounced an overwhelming-verdict for the freehold. The Herald’s hoarding, showing the result of the returns as they came in, was splendidly illuminated by the Foxton Gas Co. and appreciated by the largest open air crowd yet seen in Foxton. We are specially indebted to the postal officials, and to our evening contemporaries for their kind co-opera-tion. We also thank the public for their appreciation of our efforts in order to give them the returns at the earliest possible moment. In this respect local people were as well served as, the public in the large centres of the Dominion. The crowd was very orderly and it is pleasing to record that there were no arrests made for drunkenness during election day. The greatest interest was evinced in the licensing returns.
Manawatu—Mr Newman Wine the First Ballot.
Bridge, Rongolea, Tacnui, Turakina, Upper Tutaenui, and Awahuri Road. Mr. Stevens obtained majorities at Bulls, Greatford, Himatangi, Parawanui, Sanson, Taikorea, Wangaehu and Foxton. Mr Frankland polled 337 and Mr Gardner 295. Both these candidates will, unfortunately, lose their deposits. Mr Newman’s majority over Mr Stevens in the first ballot is 321. Messrs Frankland and Gardner totalled 632 aud it will be necessary for Mr Stevens to obtain the . major portion of these to win, that is provided the electors record their votes as in the first ballot. It is rumoured that the majority of Messrs Frankland aud Gardner’s, supporters will vote with the Op- > position. Be this as it may Mr Newman’s supporters will have to bestir themselves in order to secure the return of their champion. Already Mr Stevens’ committee is on the warpath and a close struggle is anticipated. The following are the retmus: —
