In an interesting article on “ Education in Australasia,” Mr Tate, the Victorian Director of Education, shows that New Zealand’s annual expenditure on every department of education is, relative to population, far higher than the corresponding expenditure of Victoria and New South Wales. While New South Wales, with a population ot a million and a half, spent about £984,000 in 1906-7, and Victoria, with a population of a million and a quarter, spent about ,£715,000 on education purposes, New Zealand, with a population of barely a million, spent over £88 1,000. On primary education alone, New Zealand spent last year about £709,000, while New South Wales spent £909,000, and Victoria only .£665,000; and, on a population basis, New Zealand (says the Auckland Star) therefore stands easily at the head of the list, so far as her outlay on primary education is concerned. We are obviously doing a great deal more than the two richest and most populous Australian States, and the fact that our outlay on education came to nearly £890,000 last year, ought to make us pause and reflect. Mr S. Stockbridge. 97 Tory-st. Wellington. N.Z., writes; Chamberlain’s Tablets are the finest corrective that we have ever had incur home. I ! always give them to my children and find that thev are the safest medicine for them. What I like about them is ’ that they are mild and gentle in their action and never leave any after effects. People troubled with Indigestion or Constipation will find that Chamberlain’s Tablets can always be depended upon. For sale everywhere. —Adyx.
