MANSLAUGHTER.
A Maori’s Rash Act.
Auckland, November 16
At the Supreme Court Tibi Te Pehi was charged with the murder of his brother Pi Tawa on September 15 th at Ruatoki. Tihi was minding a cow and calf belonging to another man'wheu Tawa drove them away, after knocking Tihi down in the quarrel which followed his arrival. Tihi followed his brother and was again knocked down. On rising in a passion he picked up a slick and struck Tawa over the head. Tawa died two days later.
The Judge summed up in favour of a verdict of manslaughter, and the jury returned that verdict without retiring, with a strong recommendation to mercy. The Judge said it was evident that the prisoner was the one most sorry for the crime, and had been sufficiently punished by remorse. He would sentence him to five days imprisonment, dating from the opening of the session, which meant immediate release.
