FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber on Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower, Esq), and Crs. Coley, Stiles, Gray, Hennessy and Jenks.
Mr. White made the declaration and look his seat for the first time. A petition was read from property owners and residents in Reeve Street asking lor a means of access to their properties and homes from Frances Street. A letter was read from Messrs. Moore and Barnard on behalf of Mr S. H. Baker, asking for a remission of a portion of the rales levied on his property, and pointing out that the valuation of his land was much higher than other properties in the immediate neighbourhood. They also stated that Mr Baker had been put to considerable expense by the damage caused through the borough drains being too small to carry off the water quickly during periods of heavy rain. They asked that Mr Baker’s rates be reduced by the sum of 17s rod.
It was decided that Messrs. Moore and Barnard’s letter be received, but that the Council do not acknowledge any liability. Other correspondence was read as follows :
From the Secretary of the Foxton Gas Proprietary, asking for instructions re connections with the borough lamps, and asking if they shall instruct their solicitor to draw up deeds of agreement. From Mr Patterson, Wanganui, offering 60 heavy copper street lamps for sale for Proposed byCr. Jenks, seconded by Cr. White, that the Town Clerk be instructed to reply to the secretary of the Foxton Gas Proprietary, drawing his attention to previous letters referring to the drawing up of deeds in connection with their contract for lighting the street lamps, also to stale that the Council understood that the said deed was being prepared. Carried.
It was decided on the motion ol Cr. Stiles, seconded by Cr. Hennessy, that Mr. Patterson be informed that the Council do not require any street lamps at present, but should they do so he would be notified later.
Proposed by Cr. Hennessy, seconded by Cr. Jenks, that the petitioners for access to Reeve Street see what arrangements they can make with the owners of land between Frances and Reeve Streets, and if the price of the land required is reasonable, the Council will consider, the matter. It was decided that the librarian’s resignation be accepted, and that applications be called for the position, to be in by Friday, the 20th hist.
Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Stiles that the Town Clerk be instructed to call for tenders for the erection of a fence between the Council Chambers section and the section owned by Mr C. A. Lange, fence to consist of totara posts and two 4 by 2 rails, and 5 feet galvanized-iron. Posts to be 9 feet a-part. Carried. The ker sene lamps now obselete were ordered to be placed in the auction room for sale.
Cr. Jenks moved, and Cr. Hennessy seconded, that a cheque for five guineas be forwarded to the Rev. Mr Maion in remuneration for his visit to Foxlon re water supply. Accounts amounting to £72 13s 3d were passed for payment, and the reports of the overseer, treasurer, and nuisance inspector were adopted.
Cr. Stiles gave rotice to move at the next meeting that the motion relating to the refund of the which was refused by the Council at a previous meeting be rescinded and that the same be now granted as the works have been satisfactorily completed.
The Council rose at 9.45 p.m
