Mr H. Greig, on behalf of Whitaunui, Ltd., has purchased the “Crown” flaxmill, lately owned by Mr O’Connor. We understand that the purchase price was satisfactory to the buyer. The returning officer for the Manawatu County, advertises the result of the county election. The whole of the old councillors are re-elected, and we doubt whether the electors could have been better suited.
The revenue returns for last quarter show that, for the first time for many years, the colony is at a standstill. Customs decreased £j60,000, railways ,£’15,000, registration fees £,'9:100 and postal £g2ooo. The falling-off totals The expenditure shows an increase of over ,£400,000 for the quarter. It is slated in Wellington that, according to the English mail received there, the Hon. W. P. Reeves did not voluntarily seek to be relieved of bis duties as High Commissioner, but .was practically asked to resign so that the Hou. W. Hall-Jones could take up the running in London as the representative of the dominion. Further, it is alleged that Mr Reeves feels strongly over the matter. Speaking at Palmerston South, Mr Jas. Mitchell gave several instances ot anomalies in the railway charges. Ihe other day, he said, a man went to the Waiareka Junction station and wished to book a parcel for Oamaru. The clerk said'the charge would be gd. The man replied that gd was too much, and that he would not pay it. And he did not. Instead he took out a ticket for himself at a cost of 3d, and carried the parcel with Mm. A little girl named Beatrice Edmonds met with a serious accident on Tuesday. She was playing at Shelly Beach, Ponsonby, when she fell over a cliff about 25 feet high. Eye witnesses of the accident state that they felt certain that the little girl had been killed, and were relieved to find on investigation that she bad had a marvellous escape, although painfully injured. A medical examination revealed the fact that her left thigh had been broken, and she was suffering from shock. She was removed to the hospital. The s.s. Planet, which was destroyed by fire on Monday last, was originally a ferry boat running between Auckland aud North Shore. After being laid up for a few years she was brought from Auckland to Foxton for use on the Manawatu river. The s.s. Mataura was built some years ago in Foxton, her ribs having been originally in the s.s. Ivy, then owned by Captain Sawyers, now in command of the s.s. Kiripaki, trading between Wellington and Patea. She passed through several hands before she came into the possession of the present owners.
In the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday, William Richard McLean, alias Murphy, alias Loob, was charged with attempted murder and using obscene language. The Crown Prosecutor stated the prisoner was travelling between Te Awamutu and Taumaruuui. a prohibited district, with whisky in his possession. He was detained by Constable Maher, whom he assaulted, trying to tear his flesh, dislocate his jaw, gouge his eyes out and drown him. Accused kicked Maher and belaboured him with a heavy piece of timber. Constable Maher gave evidence in support of counsel’s opening.
