Mrs de Ridder has vacancies for two gentlemen boarders. A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced in this district at an early yesterday morning. The weather was a little rough at the Heads yesterday, but an enjoyable time was spent by those excursionists who patronised the sea shore. Mr Thos. Rimmer has returned to Foxton, after au extended trip to the Old Country. We are pleased to see our ex-townsman looking “fit and well.”

The attention of lovers of art is directed to the sale (by auction), absolutely without reserve, of Mr H. Gillens’ pictures, on Thursday afternoon next. For particulars see advertising columns. Mr Horn blow has been asked by the No-license Teague to speak on the no-license question and reply to Dr. Halherley, in the Masonic Hall, to-morrow (Wednesday) evening at 8 o’clock. Mr P. J. Heunessy will preside. Front seats reserved for ladies. Opponents particularly requested to attend.

The official programme of the Foxtou Racing Club meeting for 22nd and 23rd January, 1909, has been submitted to and duly approved by the Metropoliton Club, and will appear in our next issue. The stakes amount to ,£1,500.

The Athletic Club’s Concert was well attended last night. The programme was short, if not sweet. The trophies won during the day were presented to the successful competitors amidst tumultuous applause. A torchlight procession headed by the Baud preceded the concert and proved a great attraction.

During his address at Carterton, Sir Joseph Ward said it was intended to carry cement and melal . free for dairy farmers on the railways, lo enable them to comply with the dairy regulation*''. In a short time money for the produce sold in London would be available, and some five millions would return to the coffers of the banks.

Mr Harry Lauder has been promoted to the position of the King’s Jester, in the palce of the late Dan Leno. He was commanded to give a performance before the King at Ruifor Abbey, Lord Savile’s country residence. He was the only performer on the programme, and for nearly an hour and a quarter he entertained the King and Lord Savile’s guests. “ I was nearly unnerved at -first,” he said afterwards, “ but when I saw the King laughing as heartily as anyone else, I recovered my balance at once. The King’s laughter is contagious. He has a deep ringing laugh, which acted on me like a tonic, and I never sang with so much enthusiasm.” M¥--Lauder sang ‘‘l Love a Lassie,” ‘‘Stop your Tickling Jock,” and “ The Wedding of Sandy McNab.” • The King appeared, to like “ The Saftest of the Family ” best of the repertoire.

At a meeting of the Marton branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, held on November 5, the following resolution was unanimously carried :—“ That this Union endorses the action of the Trades’ Council Conference in urging the workers of the Dominion to vote NoLicense, and considers that the democratic bare majority rule should supercede the present three-fifths enactment of the local option poll.”
