WATCHORN, STICKS & CO.

This firm is now showing some very fine designs in cotton fabrics, and the range will be very hard to beat. Most of the goods are imported direct, and the prices will be found at least as low as anywhere. We would . strongly recommend that before going outside to purchase New Season’s Goods, that this firm be called upon, and it will be found unnecessary to purcuase elsewhere. Their New Season’s Dress Goods will be shown next week in a large range of materials, and as their Dressmaking Department is now known all round the District for first-class work, they anticipate a very busy season,*

According to a Eon Jon correspondent the staff of the New Zealand • High Commissioner’s office in Eondon numbers 27, of whom 9 have had New Zealand experience. Their salaries aggregate ,£6,700. The High Commissioner gets ,£2,000 ; the secretary ;£8oo; the accountant £275 (and £265 as audit officer) ; the produce commissioner £445, and his assistant ,£216 ; clerks and messengers’ salaries total ,£2,054. The total cost of the office, including salaries is .£9,032. Of those holding responsible positions, the only veteran is Mr Kennaway, the secretary, who is 72’. His knowledge of Anglo-Colonial finance extends over 30 years, and his experience in financial work of this nature is unrivalled at the present time. At ,£BOO a year such an officer is very cheaply secured. One of the subordinate officials in the immigration branch is over fifty, but he has had over 30 years’ experience of immigration work, and the High Commissioner regards him as an extremely useful man. As for the suggestion that the office is over-stalled, both Mr Reeves and Mr Kennaway stated that so far from the men being under-worked, they are over-worked. A very considerable amount of overtime is found necessary in order to cope with the work, which grows constantly from year to year.”
