TO THE ELECTORS, MANAWATU DISTRICT Ladies and Gentlemen, — IN the Electoral Contest of 1905, when the forces of the Liberal Party and of the Opposition seemed very evenly balanced in this district, I found it to be my duty —as a loyal party man—to retire in favour of Mr John Stevens, who was the accepted Government candidate. I, however, after doing so, circulated my (printed) campaign speeches among all the voters of the district; so that all who were at that time on the roll had an opportunity of hearing what my chief political views are. In the present campaign, on the other hand, I am happily absolved from these particular bonds of Party discipline, through the Premier’s Second Ballot Bill, which has passed the Third Reading in the House. This Bill, as you will readily understand, makes me free to solicit your suffrages on this occasion with the feeling that I am only helping my Party instead of injuring it, by doing so.
