ADVANCES TO SETTEERS.
The Premier stated in the House of Representatives on Wednesday night that the money lent by the Advances to Settlers Department had been distributed as follows : Auckland, £1,905,000; Taranaki, £1,603,859 ; Hawke’s Bay, £354,360; Wellington, £2,271,000; Nelson, £170,435; Westland, £123,400 ; Canterbury, £695,000 ; Otago and Southland, £1,431,930. The total applicants had been 24,541, and the total advances £8,894,690. The total amount raised up to date by the Government for investment was £4,535,000. In tho Workers Dept, the figures were as follow: —Auckland, applicants 454, advances £110,515; Taranaki, applicants 60, advances £14,255 ; Hawke’s Bay, applicants 99, advances £25,360 ; Wellington, applicants 428, advances £111,550; Marlborough, applicants 65, advances £16,295 ; Nelson, applicants 56, advances £1,215. Westland, applicants 35, advances £15,070 ; Canterbury, applicants 433, advances £112,595; Otago, applicants 235 advances £56,680. Thus, to September 3rd last, 1,915 applicants had received advances totalling £482,035.
