COLLISION OF THE ARGONAUT
Founders in Twenty
Minutes.
London, September 30.
The tourist steam yacht Argonaut, proceeded to the Mediterranean, foundered after colliding with the collier Kingswell in a fog in the channel. All the 113 passengers and 118 of the crew were saved. A French lady lost jewels valued at ,£SOOO. The tourists had many thrilling experiences and an appalling disaster was narrowly averted by the proximity of the rescuing vessels, the full provision of boats aboard the Argonaut, the splendid discipline of the crew and the great coolness of the passengers, together with the fact that the occurrence happened in daytime. The Argonaut’s passengers included 50 ladies, who were breakfasting when the collision occurred. They were instantly transferred to the boats. She foundered within twenty minutes of the accident. The passengers were taken aboard the Kingswell, which had to be beached owing to her injuries. Another vessel thereupon rescued the passengers, conveying them to Dover.
