In connection with the anti-trust case against the Huddart-Parker Company, one of the questions put was whether the agreement to carry coal applied to New Zealand. Paris, September 26. Fernando Canatrava, a Spanish anarchist, has been arrested at Pau, France, on a charge of plotting to assassinate King Alfonso at Biarritz. Eondon, September 26. The by-election for one of the two seats at Newcastle-on-Tyne, caused by the death of Mr Thomas Cairns (Liberal), resulted in the Unionist candidate winning the seat. The figures are as under : Mr C. Renwick (Unionist) 13,863 Mr ShorttJ(Liberal) ... 11,720 Mr Hartley (Socialist) ... 2,971 Unionist majority ... 2,143 Eiberal majority (1906) 6,481 Candidate s Views.
Effect on the Stock Exchange. Mr Renwick attributed his victory to a general belief that tariff reform will do much to relieve unemployment.
Mr. Shortt attributed his defeat to the Licensing Bill, and to the general trade depression which prevails. The result of the by-election has had an inspiring effect on the Stock Exchange.
