MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting was held at Sanson on Wednesday. Present : —Crs J. Wilson (chairman), McKenzie, Masters, Henson, Barber, Dalton, and Kendall. Correspondence was read as follows: — From the Treasurer, remitting £8 16s rod, paid-ous on tramliue. From Mr J. Stevens, M.P., stating he would be pleased to support Council’s application for grant of for construction of Beach road, Foxton.
From Clerk, Kairanga County Council, asking for ys rod, and £6q is id, being per cent cost of maintaining Awahuri bridge and Oroua bridge, respectively. From Horowheuua County Council, asking for quota of the cost of opening the Shannon bridge. From Levin Borough Council, forwarding resolution as follows ; That the time has arrived when the Government should seriously consider advisability of constructing the Levin-Greatford railway, via Foxton. The letter further suggested that a large deputation should wait on the Prime Minister and Minister of Railways at an early date, and the Manawalu County Council was asked to send a delegate. From Foxtou Chamber of Commerce, asking for grant towards costs in connection with Harbour Board Bill.
From John Sanson, Glen Oroua, stating a number of settlers in his district intended erecting what was known as a party telephone line, connecting the various homesteads with the local Post Office, and asking Council’s permission to erect poles for same on the roadside, and also asking for old tramlines.
From D. Sinclair, C.E., stating all the work on Whirokino bridge was finished, and sending claim for wages. The Overseer reported the roads throughout the county in good order.
Awahou Riding and Whirokino. —The usual repairs have been carried out in the shape of filling in ruts on the Foxton-Shanuon, Elkins, Motuiti, Kari Kari, and No. 2 and No. 6 Whirokino subdivision.
The Tramway Manager reported : Expenditure is pd, debit for the month ,£ll7 123 >' to two engines. During the past month one gang have been working on the line in the ballast pit, taking out the damaged rails and straightening up the line and packing up slack places with a few trucks of ballast along the extension. Mr S. George has completed his contract for removing a portion of the goods shed and re-building same. Two men are now employed putting the line in order at the goods shed. Linemen Fitzgerald and Sexton have been working along cleaning up the line near Rosina, and at the siding tightening up the fish plates and putting the line in order.
Receipts for August; Wharfage £ll 18s 3d, steamer ,£46 is 6d, rail ,£ls 6s 1 id, tram 93 3d. The expenses amounted to ,£253 is 4d, leaving a debit balance of £ll7 las id. The expenses included 16s for repairs to the “ Weka ” and “ Fox.” Merchandise carrie: Grain, 65 % tons ; minerals, 39 tons ; manure, 14 tons; merchandise, 87 tons ; pigs, 1 truck ; chaff, 11 tracks, posts, etc.,_ 12 trucks; meal, 49 trucks; timber, 54,900 feet; flax, 4 trucks ; old sleepers, 475 trucks; wool, 21 bales; fares, £5 9 s - The Manager reported that the traffic and passengers had increased since last month. The engine ”Weka”had come back from Feildiug, and was now being run when the traffic was not heavy. The alterations to the goods shed had been completed, and the floor capacity is now 880 feet. The Railway Department had informed him that “E” waggons could be used for metal for Oroua bridge, and it would be delivered as soon as possible. The total receipts for the month amounted to £lB2 4s 2d. The County Treasurer reported as follows: Bank balances, general account (cr) £3291 Bs, loan account (dr) U s II( i- Glances available in each ward: Sandon, £253 iSs gd ; Mt. Stewart £5 4s 3d; Waitohi, £l2O 19s lid ; Rongotea, £l4* 103 ; Carnarvon, ,£193 14 s 1 Kawa Kawa, £328 7s gd ; Awahou, £lO7 15 3d; Whirokino £22 13s. Permission was granted Messrs Sanson and others to erect a telephone line. The accounts passed for payment amounted to: General account £BSO 19s, loan account £206 os 6d, Tenders were accepted as follows ; Contract 44, metalling Main Drain road. R. P. Jensen, 5s 2d per yard ; No. 47, formation McEenan’s line, J. S. Cooksley, 14s per chain ; No. 45, Taikorea Road, G. W. Duncan, 4s 6d per chain ; No. 46, Kellow’s Eine, R. P, Jensen, 3s 6d per chain.
