BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP.

Lang Defeated in Sixth Itaund. The Contest Described. Melbourne, September 3. In the boxing contest for the world’s championship Burns (America) defeated Lang (Australia) in the sixth round. There was a large attendance, and before the fight commenced Squires challenged the winner. The first round was uneventful, but in the second Lang met Burns straight in the chin and sent the champion down for nine seconds, the round ending in favour ot Lang. At the end of the third round Lang looked tired. Burns was keeping his opponent constantly on the move. The fourth round held a lot of trouble for Lang. He was sent down twice in succession. He only caught the champion one heavy jolt with his right. Burns’ in-fighting was too much for the Victorian.

In the fifth round Lang received a series of quick left-hand jabs. Then Burns dropped him for five seconds, and shortly after floored him for eight seconds. Out of a quick exchange Burns slipped, and was down a couple of seconds, but found Lang’s chin with a heavy right, and sent his opponent prone for four seconds, when the round closed. In the sixth round Burns had Lang dancing round the ring. Finally, he cornered him, and planted a series of left jabs on the face and body. Twice in succession Burns dropped him, the first time for eight seconds, and the second for nine, the latter punch sending Lang through the ropes. Burns was “fooling” Lang, letting him land him on the face. Finally the champion rushed his man across the ring, feinted with his left, and sent a heavy right cross which lauded on the jaw and knocked Lang clean out when the round had ten seconds to go.

Bang was thoroughly exhausted in the sixth round. He got up feebly after the second knock down, and Burns dropped his hands and let him hit him on the face several times. Then the champion tapped Lang sharply on the point, and ended the fight.
