ALL SAINTS’ ANNUAL TEA.
A good crowd assembled in the Public Hall on Tuesday evening last, on the occasion of the muchlooked - forward - to annual tea, under the auspices ot All Saints’ Church. Shortly before 6 p.m. everything was in readiness, and the tastefully decorated tables, laden with all manner of tempting and appetising delicacies, presented a most pleasing appearance. The ladies of the Guild, who were responsible for the function, were kept busily engaged for upwards of an hour and a-half in attending to the wants of the numerous hungry individuals assembled, and much credit is due to them for the zealous manner in which they worked throughout the entire preparatory operations, thus ensuring the pronounced success attained. Special mention is also due to Mr Hoult, whose untiring efforts were much appreciated, for the assiduous way in which he assisted the ladies by relieving them of the rougher work, which inevitably accompanies an event of this character. After the good things provided bad been done ample justice to, the Hall was cleared, and preparations made tor the “ lantern talk ” by Mr Coates, on the Melanesian Mission. Much interest was evinced by the audience, and the address proved both instructive and enlivening; the pictures shown were exceptionally clear, and gave one a splendid view of the beauties of Norfolk Island; the noble work of the missionaries in those parts, and the good done by them for the natives was depicted in the various slides showing how the missionary taught them to sow their crops, etc., etc., and in every possible way endeavoured to make the unlovely and ignorant lives of the natives brighter and happier, themselves enduring all the privations and hardships akin to the European life on the islands. The speaker concluded by urging upon his hearers the necessity for their help in some way, to assist in carrying on the good work of the Mission. The pronouncing of the doxology by the vicar dispersed the gathering.
