BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Present: The Mayor (B. G. Gower, Esq.), and Crs G. Coley, G. Gray, F. E. Jenks, Geo. Stiles, and S. H. Baker. The Clerk reported that no tenders had been received for the formation of Putter Street. An estimate was tabled for the work and it was resolved that fresh tenders be called for the work locally, and in the Devin paper.—Councillors remarked that it appeared that work must be plentiful at present. The second district electors’ list was confirmed and signed. ijA letter was read from the Town Clerk of Devin as follows: —At a public meeting held here on the sth inst., the following resolution was passed : viz, “ That this meeting is of opinion that the time has arrived when the Government should seriously consider the advisability of constructing the proposed railway from Devin to Marton via Foxton, believing that such a work would be of great benefit to the Main Trunk system of this Island, and would further open up a block of country, profitable to the Railway Department. This meeting, further, urges the Borough Council to impress upon the Government the necessity of at once taking the matter in hand, and to invite the co-operation of the local bodies more immediately concerned, viz, Marton and Foxton Borough Councils, Manawatu and Horowhenua County Councils, and the Town Boards of Rongotea and Bulls,” The Devin Borough Council, at a meeting held last night, decided to comply with the wishes of the burgesses as expressed by the above resolution, and is desirious that a large deputation of local bodies and settlers interested should wait upon the Premier and Minister of Railways at an early date, I should be glad to know whether your Council would be willing to send a delegate or delegates to urge this matter with the Government. Awaiting your reply. The Mayor said the Ra ngitikei County Council had been overlooked. After a short discussion, it was resolved to combine with the other local bodies in sending a deputation to wait on the Ministry. Cr Jenks said the junction should- be Marton, and not Greatford. A petition was presented by Cr Coley, on behalf of certain settlers in the Avenue, requesting a culvert to be put down to carry off surface water in main drain. —It was decided to put down a culvert of 4-inch drain pipes as requested.
