ROMANCE OF LOVE.
Lost Both Sweetheart and Friend. Paris, June 30. In a bar at Montmartre two young men, Rene and Jules, had a toss up as to which of them should marry a girl, with the result that the man who lost the toss committed suicide. The story can be summed up in a few words. They were still young, being scarcely above 20 years of age, and had been chums ever since they had gone to school together. Both of them fell in love with the same girl, which, however, did not cool their friendship. They discussed the question many a time in an amicable way as to how to settle the matter, and as neither would voluntarily consent to renounce the girl in favour of the other, they finally agreed to have a toss up. It so happened that Rene won and Jules lost. Rene, of course, was delighted, while Jules went away sad. Rene followed him, trying to console him on the way home, but this only made matters worse. “ Nothing will console me now,” said the disappointed lover, and before his friend was aware of it, Jules had pulled out a revolver, and fired a shot through his head. He was carried to a hospital, but expired soon afterwards. Worse than all, the girl who had been the innocent cause of one of her lover’s despair, when she heard of the tragedy, refused to marry the other, with the result that, owing to a simple toss up, Rene has now lost a friend and a sweetheart.
