GREAT BALLOON RACE.
Exciting Experience of Aero-
nauts in America
Chicago, July 6
The nine balloons which started on Saturday evening to race from Chicago to the Atlantic Ocean, had exciting experiences before they landed. Messrs A. E. Muller and George Schoereck, with the balloon Ville de Dieppe, were dragged along the surface * of Eake Michigan, and were in great danger until most of the ballast had been thrown out, and the balloon rose skyward to a height of 70ft. For several minutes, however, before the leap upward took place, the aeronauts had to take refuge in the rigging to avoid being drowned. The aeronauts then suffered severely from the cold in the high altitude to which they ascended, but eventually they settled near Benton Harbour.
The men aboard the Illinois, Messrs Case and Gregory, were also rescued when dangerously near the water, and several other competitors had narrow escapes when the cars collided with trees and telegraph wires.
