The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1908.
Last night’s Palmerston Standard published the following : —“ln a reference to the desirability of harbour improvements at Foxtou, the Taihape News stales :—‘ So insistent has the Manawatu Standard been in this matter for many months past that no doubt something will be the outcome of the agitation, and there is a strong prospect of the Chamber of Commerce in Palmerston and Foxton taking the question up.’ ” The Herald does not exchange with the Taihape News, otherwise that journal would know that the principal agitation for the construction of a harbour board during the past two years has emanated from the columns of this journal, and our Palmerston evening contemporary, as well as other journals throughout the province, have re-printed reports, etc., on same. Mr P. J. Hennessy, president of the local Chamber of Commerce has, however, been the moving spirit in the matter during the past few months, and it is due to him, backed up by the member for the district and other prominent settlers, that the present Bill is now before the House. The press, as a whole, has done its part in seconding local efforts to have the port of Manawatu under proper control, and we have no doubt but what the Government will do the square thing by the local port.
