GENERAL CABLES.

New York, August 16

Sanguinary rioting took place at Springfield, Illinois, bodies of armed whites wrecking and burning the negro quarter in revenge for an assault on a white woman. The Governor sent the militia with Gatling guns to quell the disturbance. Several negroes and whites were killed. The riot was caused by an assault by a negro on a sleeping woman. The whites invaded the negro quarter and clubbed the negroes with sticks and revolver butts. A drink enraged mob dominated Springfield throughout the night. The militia fired at the legs of the crowd and restored partial order. Whites from the neighbouring towns are swarming in to assist in the racial war.
