GENERAL CABLES.
VANCouvKr August i. An explosion occurred in the Crows’ Nest Colliery, British Columbia. Twenty-three miners are entombed. There is little hope of rescuing them. Sydney, August i. The butter market is excited and quotations are expected to advance at Melbourne to-morrow to 187 s per cwt. The Mareeba arrived off Newcastle last night, but owing to the heavy weather the captain decided to stand by till daylight. She grounded at 4 o’clock in the morning, in dark and dirty weather, broadside on, well up on a shelving sandy beach. The crew had little difficulty in lauding. Subsequently she was driven inshore and heavy seas are pouring over her. They drove in the port holes and made a hole in the deck. Her signals of distress were unobserved. The second officer and cook walked away inland to secure assistance. The crew reached Newcastle last night, several in a state of collapse through trying experiences. They were unable to get anything to eat all day. All the boats ou the port side were smashed, but the crew managed to launch the starboard lifeboat. Several men got away with it, but it capsized in the surf. They, however, reached the shore safely A life line was then got ashore and the crew landed. The captain remained aboard till the life.-saving brigade arrived in the afternoon. The cargo is valuable, including a thousand tons of raw sugar, Calcutta, July 31. After the recent severe rioting, Sir G. Sydenham Clarke, Governor of Bombay, visited the wounded rioters at the hospital, sympathised with them in their injuries, and expressed the hope that they would not participate in further riots. London, August 1. Australian stocks rose one per cent, ou Friday afternoon on the announcement that the new South Australian loan will be issued through the usual channels. The issue is not expected until after the summer holidays. Mr Price, the Premier of South Australia, will not decide till then. The underwriting of the entire amount of the loan was completed on Friday. Mr Jenkins denies the city rumour that strained relations exist between himself and the Premier, and that Mr Price induced Mr Jenkins to go to Lisbon, and that he (Mr Price) in the meantime arranged the loan with Lloyds Bank. Mr Jenkins declares that their relations were most harmonious, especially on finance, as shown by a letter from Mr Price at Florence referring to his (Mr Price’s) official telegrams to the Treasurer.
