The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 28, 1908. TELEPHONE HOURS EXTENSION.

We clip the following paragraph from the Wairarapa News in reference to the 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. telephone service: “The Secretary of the Featherston Chamber of Commerce has received word that the extra charge for the eight to eight service is not to be enforced,. and all those that have already paid it, will be given credit for the amount when rendering the next account.” This reminds us that although representations have been made to the Department to have the extended service appli--3d to Foxton, no intimation has yet been received in reply. This brings to our mind a point which has been inadvertently overlooked by those who desire the prompt attention of Government departments. We have a Parliamentary representative, whose duty it is to air our grievances and supply our local needs. It is a pleasure to Mr Stevens to do this, but unless we “ use him ” and take him into our fullest confidence we cannot expect him to know anything of our requirements, except in a roundabout way. All requests forwarded to Government departments are, as a rule, brought under the notice of the representative for the district, and one can imagine the feelings

of a member when asked to deal with a request second-hand. In Mr Stevens we have a representative ever ready to forward the interests not only of Foxton, but of the whole electorate, and it should be hardly necessary for us to state that all requests should be made through him. We hope, however, that Mr Stevens will intercede on behalf of local telephone subscribers, and have the hours extended at the local exchange, which we are entitled to by reason of the fact that we have more than the number of subscribers prescribed in order to obtain the concession.
