Brisbane, July 23. A Japanese cook in an hotel at Townsville shot a young girl named Gallagher who was employed at the hotel. He then shot himself dead. He had a quarrel with the girl a few days ago. Brussels, July 22, Several suspected Anarchists have: been arrested in Brussels. It is rumoured that it was their intention to attempt the life of King Leopold. Capetown, July 22. With a view to further retrenching, the De Beers mine at Kimberley is closing on July 31st. This will render 200 whites and 1200 natives idle. Sydney, July 23. Funds for the entertainment of the American fleet—concerning which the Lord Mayor recently condemned citizens’ parsimony—are now coming in more freely. New York, July 23. The United States Circuit Court cf Appeal has quashed the twentynine million dollars fine against the Standard Oil Company, and has ordered a re-trial. The Court held that Judge Landis committed irregularities, and that he was wrong in basing the fine on the wealth of the parent company instead of on the capital of the Standard Oil Company of Indiana. London, July 23. The Hon. W. P. Reeves (High Commissioner for New Zealand) has been appointed Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science in connection with the London University. London, July 23. In the House of Commons Mr T. R. Buchanan ( Under-Secretary for India) submitted the Indian Budget. He admitted that there had been a general spread in certain districts of unrest, and distrust, and in some cases violent outrages had occurred. The Government were convinced that such methods were utterly repugnant to Indians and Europeans. The Government were, he added, constantly receiving assurances of support from all sections in stamping out “ this hateful form of political disease.”
