The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JULY 23, 1908. VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT.
The lletter from the Defence Department, which we publish in our columns to-day, should be gratifying to the promoters of a company of volunteers for Foxtou and to all who are interested in the movement. While it is not absolutely certain that the services of the proposed corps will be accepted, there can be no doubt that the authorities have given the application a favourable consideration, and the probability is strong that the corps will soon become an established fact. The Defence Department letter is as good as an acceptance. The only thing that remains to be done is to muster a big meeting of enthusiasts for Wednesday evening at the Borough Council Chambers, so as to impress on the Commanding Officer of the District the fact that the residents of Foxtou earnestly desire a corps formed here and are prepared to afford it their active and consistant support. Foxton has a bad name aboad for steady interest in any undertaking, and we hope local volunteer enthusiasts will not allow this stigma to rest upon the coming corps. The first step then is to assemble in strong force on Wednesday evening.
