THE GAS WORKS.

Good progress is being made by the contractor, Mr E. E. H. Stone, with the erection of the retort bench for the Foxton Gas Company. Our representative was shown over the works by the manager, Mr Heyes, on Wednesday last. The retort benches are being erected on the most up-to-date regenerating principles —a vast improvement on the old system. The benches consist of two settings of retorts, one setting containing two retorts, and the other three. This will give a gasproducing capacity of three and a-half million cubic feet per annum. Ample provision is also made for future extension. Mr Heyes stated that he hoped to be able to manufacture gas by the the middle of September. Next week, weather permitting, the gas mains will all be laid, and a start made with the services and housefittings. The condenser, engine, exhauster, and station meter are all in position, and Mr Heyes hopes that the contractor for the erection of the gas-holder and tank will commence the work of erection next week. The contract for this work has been let to Mr Blakespear, of Wellington. The tender of Mr Stone for the erection of the meter and governor house and manager’s room, has been accepted.
