THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.
Levin-Foxfcn-Greatford Route.
Years ago when the late Mr R. J. Seddon was paying a visit to Levin, says the Farmer, inspecting the Training Farm buildings, then nearing completion, and looking over the Kxperimental Farm, the writer chatted with him on the matter of a line of rail from Levin, through Foxton, and on to Greatford. The great chief did not hesitate to give his opinion. He said it was then premature to deal with the question, but he added : “It will be part of the big railway scheme which is to unite Wellington and Auckland. The Main Trunk Line and the taking over of the Manawatu Line must be dealt with first.” The late Premier seemed to be fully acquainted with the proposals connected with the branch line from Levin through Foxton, but he was averse to any company being allowed to construct the line. This is pretty well known, for old residents will remember, continues our contemporary, how a survey was made of the country between Levin and Greatford, the money was ready to embark in the work of construction, but Mr Seddon put his foot down upon the project being left to private enterprise. Sir Joseph Ward has said that the proposed line of railway between Levin and Greatford “must come.” If this is the conviction of our present Premier we can wait patiently for the march of events. “It must come” are significant words, and shows clearly that the project has been well considered at headquarters.
