A great deal of attention is being paid at Home to schemes of diet which are both cheap and nutritious. The New York Health and Housing Reform Association have issued a pamphlet showing that a family of five can be well fed on i as qd a week. The family is supposed to consist of a father doing fairly hard work, a mother and three children, aged about eleven, eight, and three. Four meals a day are provided. The 12s pd is made upas follows: — Oatmeal 4 ] /fd, flour 2s treacle 3d, jam i 3 4d, sugar 6d, potatoes yd, turnips and carrots 2d, barley rice, lentils and green peas 6/2 d, onions currants and figs tea cocoa Slid, meat and bacon 2s njtsd, cheese 3d, milk is, fish BJ/td,8 J /td, dripping is sundries The following is a sketch of one day’s meals : —Breakfast: Porridge and treacle, tea, bread, and dripping, herrings (3). Dinner: Barley broth, boiled meat and potatoes. Tea : Tea, bread, jam. Supper ; Brown bread, dripping, cheese, cocoa, and milk. A number of important hints to housewives accompany these suggestions. They are told that the cheaper cuts of meat are just as nourishing and digestible as chops'and steaks and the more expensive parts used for roasting, and more economical. Mothers are advised that a good breakfast is all important to children, and that plenty of food
should he given at midd.-iy. Tea and coffee are declared to have no feeding value whatever, their use being justified only by their stimulating action and the means they afford of taking milk and sugar.
