FOXTON CRICKET ASSOCIATION.
Smoke Concert. A very enjoyable function was held in 2dr M. I‘cneau’s last night, when the members of the various clubs affiliated with the Foxton Cricket Association, partook of an excellent repast and smoke concert. Every available seat at both tables was occupied, and included among those present were many of the leading citizens. Mr W. J. White presided. The gathering was to mark the close f 1 the first competition for the handsome oak and silver Austin Shield, and to do honour to this year’s champions, the Foxton Club. The shield, by the way, is to be . won twice in succession, or three t times at intervals. The position ' of the clubs this year was as lows: —Foxton leg in, Moutou runners up, and Debaters third. The following toasts were honoured ; "The King,” Chairman ; in a happy speech Mr G. H. Stiles, captain of the Debaters, proposed the toast of the "winning team,’' complimenting the winners on their enthusiasm and practice methods. He, however, would not concede that his team was infeiior, and they intended to annex the shield next year. Mr W. S. Stewatt, secretary of the Foxton Club, tespouded. Mr Stewait briefly referred to his long connection with his club and its varying fortunes. He paid a very glowing tribute to Mr O. E. Austin, one of his old scholars, for the handsome trophy he had given to the association for competition. Such a sportsmanlike act had done much to stimulate enthusiasm in the grand old game. He hoped his club would have the honour of annexing the trophy next year. Mr Wauklyn, senr., skipper of the honoured team, also briefly responded. Mr Alf. Fraser proposed the toast of the Foxton Cricket; Association, and complimentedSthis year’s winners. He related some amusing incidents in connection with his early association with cricket and paid a high tribute to the association. Mr Mainwaring Secretary, responded. Mr Bullard proposed the toast ol “kindred spoils’’ responded toby Mr Gordon (rowing), J. W. Rough (hockey) and A. D. Clemelt (tennis). Mr G. Fowler proposed “The Ladies” responded to by Messrs Dunn and A. E. Shadbolt. Other toasts were: “ The Press ” Mr A. D.Clemett—J.K. Hornblow; “ The Secretary ” W. Bowe—W. Mainwaring ; * 1 The Father of local cricket, MrStwart,” MrShadbolt — Mr Stewart; ‘ 1 The donor of the shield,” Mr Hornblow —Mr Austin; “ The host ” —Mr Shadbolt— Mr Perreau; The Chairman Dr. Maudl—Mr White; “The Musician Chairman Mr Cornwall. Songs were rendered by Messrs Fowler, Cook and Woods, and citations by Messrs Haggerty, Hornblow, Clemett. The proceedings terminated with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.”
