The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JULY 2, 1908. LINKING UP THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.
Mr Field is to ask the Minister for Public Works whether, now that the North Island Main Trunk line is approaching completion, and the Wellingtou-Manawatu Railway is about to become State property, he will give a place in the schelude to the Railways Authorisation Bill this session to the Levin-Foxton-Greatford deviation of the Main Trunk line, the construction of which will save about fifteen miles in the distance an an hour in the time between Wellington and Auckland. As this matter is of colonial importance, we shall await the Minister’s reply t to the member for Otaki with interest. We regret that our Palmerston evening contemporary takes such a parochial, nay, childish, view of this most important question. To hear it screech when this subject is ever mentioned, is most amusing. It should remember that the convenience of the travelling public, and expeditious mail service is of paramount importance. That mails and passengers should be delayed on the old route for upwards of two hours to suit Palmerston’s parochial whim is an utter absurdity. The linking of the main trunk line via Levin, Foxton, and Greatford, will, we have no doubt, be carried into effect at an early date.
