London, June 30. The hearing of the charge against Robert Siever was commenced at Bow Street to-day. According to the evidence, since the newspaper, the Winning Post was started Siever had almost weekly made an attack upon J. H. Joel and family. Recently Siever, being short of money, approached Joel for a loan, finally promising to abstain from publishing further defamatory matter it given ,£SOOO. Joel offered on condition that Siever gave a written promise. The latter refused and demanded another under a threat to publish some incidents in Joel’s life. The case remains unfinished ; bail was refused Siever. Lord Milner, at the Constitutional Club, expressed alarm that the colonies were concluding commercial treaties with foreign countries before the inevitable tariff reform was completed. The Admiralty is carrying on extensive manoeuvres with the fleet in the North Sea. The operations are being conducted in secret. Two hundred and fifty warships are engaged, including 28 fi s’.class battleships, 42 cruisers, 115 destroyers and 30 submarine' 1 . The suffragettes threaten that 100,000 of their supporters will surround the House of Commons to-morrow evening. Berlin, June 30. The Berlin newspapers state that seven Dreadnoughts and two luvincibles are being built in Germany. London, June 30. The Council of the Northumberland Miners’ Association, by 55 to 23, condemned the Miners’ Eight Hours Bill. The miners of the district will shortly ballot on the question. Sydney, June 30. The revenue for the year increased by Melbourne, June 30. The Commonwealth, instead of paying the June revenue to the States, paid it into the Old Age Pensions and Coastal Defence Trust funds, as provided under the Surplus Revenue Bill.
